저녁 무렵 숲 너머 지평선 멀리서 들려오는 소의 음매 소리는 감미롭고도 선율적이다.

At evening, the distant lowing of some cow in the horizon beyond the woods sounded sweet and melodious,

 

처음에 나는 그 소리를 나에게 이따금 세레나데를 들려주던 어떤 가수들이 산과 들을 돌아다니며 부른느 노래로 착각했다.

and at first I would mistake it for the voices of certain minstrels by whom I was sometimes serenaded, who might be straying over hill and dale;

 

그러나 그 소리를 계속 들으면서 소가 부르는 흔한 자연적인 음악이라는 것을 알고 실망했지만 기분은 그리 나쁘지 않았다.

but soon I was not unpleasantly disappointed when it was prolonged into the cheap and natural music of the cow.

 

그 젊은이들의 노래가 소의 노래와 비슷하다고 말한 것은 비꼬는 의미에서가 아니고 오히려 젊은이들의 노래의 진가를 인정하려는 것이다.

I do not mean to be satirical, but to express my appreciation of those youths' singing, when I state that I perceived clearly that it was akin to the music of the cow,

 

즉 양쪽이 다 같이 자연이 내는 하나의 조화된 표현인 것이다.

and they were at length one articulation of Nature.
