시련을 통해서 인내와 성품 그리고 희망을 길러내는 자세에 대한 구절이다. 시련을 통해 강해진다는 표현은 성경 구절에만 등장하는 경구는 당연 아니란 사실은 손만 아프다. 니체도 나를 죽이지 못한 것을 강하게 만들어 준다는 매력적인 아포리즘을 남겼다. 사실 시련을 통해 얻는 경험과 교훈을 온전히 내것으로 만드는게 어렵다. 날 죽이지는 못한 시련이 내 평생의 트라우마가 되기도 하기 때문이다. 철학적 거인 혹은 종교적 신념이 바탕이 되지 않은 상태로 시련을 견디는 것은 일반적인 사람에게는 힘든 일이다.
