예전에 대학에서 수업을 듣다가 서부전선 이상없다란 책에 대해 들은 적이 있다. 당시 교수의 설명과 내가 읽은 책에 대한 묘사는 상당히 다르긴 하다. 당시 교수는 서부전선 이상없다란 책을 통해 당시 1차대전 프랑스와 독일의 대치상태가 지리할 정도로 지속되었음을 설명하기 위해 책을 동원했던 것으로 보인다. 이 책은 위와 같은 전시상황을 위한 책이 아니다. 젊은 청년들이 전장에 휘몰려 목숨을 잃어가는 참상을 그려낸 소설이다. 나는 사실 소설을 읽는데 잼병이다 등장인물들을 정확히 기억하는 것도 어려워한다. 그래서 이번에도 인물들을 굳이 기억하려 애쓰지 않았다. 다행히 이 책은 주인공인 파울이란 인물을 중심으로 사건과 상황을 묘사하는 형식으로 진행된다. 이점은 그나마 다행이다. 주인공과 주변 전우들은 여느 청년들..
