종교는 가난한 이들에게 안식을 주눈, 죄지은자에게 용서를 빌 기회를 주는 역할은 한다. 가난을 마치 죄악처럼 여기는 오늘날에, 능력주의 사회에서 자책하는 이들을 위해 정서적인 안정을 줄 수 있는 몇 안되는 방책이 믿음이다. 나도 종교친화적 발언은 대놓고 하기엔 좀 민망하지만, 종교의 역할은 결국 빈자의 손을 잡아주는게 가장 크다. 이 역할을 수행하고자 수천년간 고등종교가 유지된 것이라 봐도 무방하다. 

 

비종교인에게도 가난한 이들에게 선행을 베푸는 가치를 종교인 못지 않게 우선순위로 두는 개인 혹은 공동체가 존재한다. 가난한 이에게 선행을 베푸는 행위 그 자체가 하나의 문화로 자리잡는 분위기를 소망한다.
