전차와 말을 믿는 사람들과 달리 신에 대한 믿음을 논한 구절이다. 물질적인 풍요를 신뢰하는 일종의 황금만능주의, 오늘의 자본주의 세태와 크게 다르지 않은 대중의 심리를 엿볼 수 있다. 종교적인 믿음이란 것은 물질에 대한 믿음을 넘어 근본적 신념체계의 전환이다. 오늘날의 무종교가 확산이 되는 것은 자본주의의 속성이 사람들에게 더 강하게 스며들기 때문이다. 자본주의, 돈이 종교인 시대에서 우리는 어떤 믿음을 갖고 살아야 할지 고민해볼 문제다.
