*The Negro's great stumbling block is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice,... who paternalistically belive he can set the timetable for another man's freedom.
**Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misuderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.
*Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutualiy, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects on directly affects all indirectly.
If a man hasn't discovered something that he will die for, he isn't fit to live.
***Nonviolence is the answer to the crucail political and moral questions of our time; the need for man to overcome oppression and violence without resorting to oppression and violence.
Man must evolve for all human conflict a method which reject revenge, aggression and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love.
We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now.
**In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.
*Returning violence for violene mutiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that.
*The law my not change the hearts, but it can restrain the heartless.
**Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.
One who breaks an unjust law must do so openly, lovingly, ... and with a willingness to accept the penalty.
I submit that an individual who breaks a law that conscience tell him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the coscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for law.
We can never forget that everything Adolf Hitler did in Germany was "legal" and everthing Hungarian freedom fighters did in Hungary was "illegal."
*The means by which we live have outstanced the ends for which we live.Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men.
**I belive that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right temporarily defeated is stronger than evil triumphant.
*The untimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.
**Faith is taking the first step even then you don't see the whole staircase.
***The ultimate meaure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challege and controversy.
